Description
UTD Doubles MINI
What is the goal?
During this relatively short course we will teach you how to properly configure, setup, and dive a UTD/DIR twinset, You will start with the equipment configuration and a detailed explanation of the reasoning behind this. Then you will be practicing your in-water skills first as dry runs on land with your team and your instructor, and later underwater in a controlled environment. This course will set you up for further training in a twinset, like taking the UTD Essentials of Tech class or bridging the gap between the UTD Essentials of Rec class, to Essentials of tech.
Who is it for?
If you are interested in learning all the finer details about using a twinset for your diving, and you are not the diver who just settles with an explaination that stops with ” this is what we have always done” , or ” you can do whatever”. But you desire to find out the true reasoning behind every choice and protocol. And you want to get your diving skills to a level where you can safely use this twinset, then this is the course for you. You can be a certified Open Water Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver just looking to get more gas available or you have been diving a twinset for a while but struggle with skills like trim or valve drills, this could be a great course for you.
How long does it take?*
The UTD Doubles MINI usually takes, 1 day where you make 2 dives and go through some theory combined with and equipment configuration workshop.
What equipment do I need?
You would need your standard scuba gear, preferably a drysuit, ( you will learn why in the lecture on the balanced rig) twinset cylinders, and regulator set with 2 first stages DIN, 2 second stages, one on a necklace bungee, and one on a 210cm or 7ft LP hose. A backplate and single piece harness and a wíng to match. Please confirm with your instructor before buying gear so you don’t end up with the wrong gear for this course. Even if you are looking at used gear, reach out first and resist the temptation of a seemingly good deal.
What can I do after?
This course will not give you new diving limits like deeper depths or different gasses. However, it will set you up with a great base for future development, and it will give you the confidence to use a twinset as a means of taking more gas with you under water for longer dives, or making multiple dives on one system.

The costs and pricing structure for UTD courses is almost always built up in 3 sections
1:The price for the course materials you buy directly at the UTD website.
2: The price for the in-person instruction from your instructor
3: Local fees or diving expenses. These could be entry fees, pool rental, equipment rental, etc. inquire with your instructor for details about this. If this course requires the instructor to travel to or with you, the students share the traveling costs of the instructor.
*The course duration is determined by a baseline of the abilities of the average students and coupled with what we need to comfortably introduce the skills and go over the theory content.
However, when you buy a UTD course from one of our instructors, you pay for training, not for a “plastic reward for participation”. We will give you the ability to look at your strengths and weaknesses, and during the class, we can expand on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses.
Scuba Diving is highly skills-based and theory-based, throw in some complex equipment and you get a mixture of many aspects to master. You should be comfortable with all three aspects to get the most out of your diving and be safe. All of us learn at different paces. It is therefore almost impossible to give everybody the same timeframe to master the complete curriculum.
Some students might need more coaching or just more time to master certain aspects of the course. You can always do so by seeking out more training outside the curriculum and the time constraints of the standard course layout. You can find the price for extra training with your instructor.
If you together with your instructor decide that more training is needed, we have a document called “Path to completion” It will give you a clear path to reach your goal. That can be a beginner taking the first scuba class, or the advanced diver moving into technical diving. All will succeed…at their own pace.
